How it works
You turn a skill into a structured programme people pay to work through. The margin is close to total — a course costs the same to sell once or a thousand times — which makes it one of the most profitable things on this site, provided you already have people who trust you.
How to start
- 01
Sell it before you build it
Pre-sell to a small group at a discount and deliver live. This proves demand, funds the work and produces testimonials, and avoids spending three months building something nobody buys.
- 02
Teach a specific outcome
"Learn photography" sells badly. "Book your first five paid wedding shoots" sells, because the buyer knows exactly what they get.
- 03
Structure around the student's progress
Courses fail on completion, not content. Short lessons, clear milestones and something to do after each module matter more than production quality.
- 04
Price on the value of the result
A course that helps someone earn $30,000 more a year is not a $49 product. Higher prices also attract students who finish, which produces the testimonials that sell the next cohort.
- 05
Build the audience that buys it
This is the actual constraint. Without an email list, a channel or a professional reputation, no course sells regardless of quality.
Honest trade-offs
What works
- Almost pure margin — build once, sell indefinitely with no delivery cost
- Genuinely scalable, with no relationship between students and your workload
- Forces you to structure your expertise, which raises your value elsewhere
- Pairs naturally with any audience you have already built
What does not
- Requires an existing audience; without one, this is a marketing problem, not a course problem
- The market is crowded and buyers are sceptical after years of low-quality launches
- Content goes stale and needs periodic re-recording
- Student support is real ongoing work that the "passive income" framing ignores
Risks and failure modes
- Spending months building a course for an audience that turns out not to want it
- Refund demands and chargebacks, which are higher on expensive information products
- Consumer protection rules around earnings claims are strict in many countries and easy to breach accidentally
Common questions
Expect one to three per cent of an engaged audience to buy. A 10,000-person email list with a $300 course might produce $30,000–$90,000 per launch. Without an audience, the honest expectation is close to zero, however good the course is.
You need to be meaningfully further along than your students and able to prove it. Teaching people two years behind you is often more effective than teaching from twenty years of distance, because you still remember what was confusing.
Hosted platforms handle payments, delivery and tax for a fee or a revenue share. Marketplaces bring their own buyers but keep most of the price and the customer relationship. If you have an audience, host it yourself; if you do not, a marketplace is a way to test demand.
