How it works
You publish articles targeting things people search for, earn rankings over months, and monetise the resulting traffic through display advertising, affiliate commissions or your own products. The work is heavily front-loaded — an article written once can keep earning for years — which is what makes the asset genuinely valuable.
How to start
- 01
Choose a topic with commercial intent
Traffic is not equally valuable. A visitor searching for personal finance software is worth many times one searching for a song lyric. Pick a subject where readers are close to spending money.
- 02
Find keywords you can realistically rank for
A new site cannot compete for broad, high-volume terms. Target specific, lower-competition questions where existing results are thin, and accumulate many of them rather than chasing one big term.
- 03
Publish genuinely better answers
The bar is no longer "an article exists". It is first-hand experience, original testing, real detail and clear structure. Generic summaries of what already ranks no longer earn rankings.
- 04
Build the internal structure early
Cluster articles around pillar pages and link them deliberately. This is the cheapest ranking advantage available and most new sites ignore it.
- 05
Earn links by being worth citing
Original data, tools, calculators and research get referenced. Nothing else reliably does. This is the slowest part and the hardest to shortcut.
- 06
Monetise once traffic justifies it
Display ad networks have traffic thresholds; affiliate revenue starts earlier. Below roughly 10,000 monthly visits, focus on growth rather than optimising a small number.
Honest trade-offs
What works
- Compounds — articles published a year ago keep earning without further work
- Sells as a genuine asset, typically at 30 to 45 times monthly profit
- Very low capital requirement compared with any physical business
- Skills transfer directly to any other online business you later build
What does not
- Six to eighteen months before meaningful income, which defeats most people
- Entirely dependent on search algorithms you do not control and cannot appeal to
- Content quality expectations have risen sharply, so volume alone no longer works
- Requires sustained writing output long before there is any reward for it
Risks and failure modes
- Algorithm updates can halve traffic overnight, and recovery is neither guaranteed nor quick
- AI-generated answers in search results are reducing clicks for informational queries
- Affiliate programmes can cut commission rates or close without notice
Common questions
Expect little to nothing for the first six months, modest income between six and twelve months, and meaningful income after roughly eighteen months of consistent publishing. Sites that earn faster usually started with an existing audience or an aged domain.
Typically 30 to 45 times monthly profit, so a site netting $3,000 a month might sell for $90,000–$135,000. Multiples depend on traffic stability, diversity of traffic sources and how dependent the site is on a single page or keyword.
It has become harder for simple informational queries, which AI summaries often answer without a click. It remains viable for queries where people want experience, comparison, tools or purchasing help. The safest sites now build an email list and a brand rather than relying on search alone.
