How it works

Companies pay salespeople a base salary plus commission on what they close. Because compensation is tied to revenue produced, high performers earn multiples of the average and there is no formal ceiling. It requires no capital, no degree and no qualification — only the ability to sell, which is measurable and therefore hard to fake.

How to start

  1. 01

    Start where the training is

Entry-level prospecting roles at companies with structured onboarding teach the fundamentals faster than any course, and they pay you while you learn.

  2. 02

Pick an industry with large deal sizes

Commission scales with contract value. Selling $200,000 software contracts and selling $2,000 ones require similar effort per deal and pay very differently.

  3. 03

    Learn discovery, not pitching

The best sellers ask better questions rather than talk more. Understanding what a buyer is actually trying to fix is most of the job.

  4. 04

    Build a repeatable prospecting habit

Pipeline built today closes in three months. Sellers who only prospect when desperate live in permanent cycles of feast and famine.

  5. 05

    Move up-market deliberately

The path to $300,000 is enterprise deals with long cycles and multiple stakeholders. It is a different skill from transactional selling and pays several times more.

Honest trade-offs

What works

  • Genuinely uncapped income with no capital, degree or licence required
  • Skills transfer directly to running any business you later start
  • Fast feedback and clear measurement, so competence is rewarded quickly
  • Strong demand across industries, and increasingly remote

What does not

  • Constant pressure with targets that reset every quarter regardless of last quarter
  • Rejection is the daily experience, and most people find it genuinely difficult
  • Income is variable and depends partly on territory, product and timing
  • No asset accumulates unless you deliberately invest the surplus

Risks and failure modes

  • Territory or product changes that halve your earning potential through no fault of yours
  • Quota increases that outpace what the market can support
  • Burnout, which is common and often arrives after the best years

Common questions

Entry-level prospecting roles pay $50,000–$80,000 total. Experienced account executives commonly earn $120,000–$250,000, and strong enterprise sellers exceed $400,000. Compensation is usually split roughly half base, half commission.

Neither. Entry-level roles hire for coachability, work ethic and communication. It is one of the few genuinely high-paying careers that remains open to people from any background.

It is a path to a high income, which is not the same thing. Sales earnings become wealth only if invested. Many salespeople earn $250,000 a year for a decade and have very little to show for it, which is a spending problem rather than an earning one.
