How it works
Businesses spend money on advertising and need someone who can make it return more than it costs. You manage campaigns, test creative, and report on the numbers. Because your work has a direct, visible effect on revenue, this is one of the few services where clients readily accept high retainers and performance-based pricing.
How to start
- 01
Learn on your own money first
Run a small campaign for something of your own. A few hundred dollars of your own spend teaches more than any course, and gives you something honest to talk about.
- 02
Specialise by platform and industry
"Google Ads for home services" or "Meta ads for supplement brands". Platform mechanics and buyer psychology differ enough that generalists underperform.
- 03
Learn creative, not just the ad platform
In modern ad systems, targeting is largely automated and creative does most of the work. The specialists who outperform are the ones producing better ads, not the ones adjusting bids.
- 04
Report in the client's language
Clients do not care about click-through rate. They care about cost per acquisition and return on ad spend. Reporting on revenue is what makes you hard to replace.
- 05
Move to performance pricing when you can prove results
A base retainer plus a percentage of profit above a baseline aligns everyone and removes your income ceiling — but only take it where you control enough of the funnel to be responsible for the outcome.
Honest trade-offs
What works
- Direct link to client revenue, which supports high fees and easy renewals
- Results are measurable, so raising prices is an evidence-based conversation
- Highly transferable — the same skill runs your own business's acquisition later
- Persistent demand; almost every business that advertises needs this
What does not
- Stressful, because you are spending other people's money in public view
- Results depend on the offer and product as much as on you, but you get the blame
- Platforms change rules and algorithms constantly, invalidating what worked
- Client churn is high when performance dips for reasons outside your control
Risks and failure modes
- Account bans or ad rejections that halt a client's revenue overnight
- Taking performance deals on offers that cannot be made profitable at any spend
- Being held responsible for a bad product, a slow site or a weak sales process
Common questions
Common structures are a flat retainer of $1,500–$8,000 a month, a percentage of ad spend of 10–20%, or a base plus performance share. Freelancers managing several accounts commonly reach $10,000–$20,000 a month, which is where an agency becomes the natural next step.
Search advertising is easier to make profitable because you are capturing existing intent, so it is a gentler place to start and to demonstrate results. Social advertising has a higher ceiling and depends far more on creative skill.
Run your own campaign for a small side project and document the numbers, or manage one local business's account at a low fee in exchange for using the results publicly. One real case study with revenue figures is enough to charge properly.
