How this is calculated
The projection compounds monthly and adds your contribution at the end of each month. The inflation figure is applied separately to produce the "in today's money" result - the nominal balance is untouched by it.
The number worth looking at is growth as a share of the final balance. Over ten years it is typically around a third; over thirty it is commonly two thirds or more. Nothing about the strategy changes between those two points, only the time.
